Gabby Gabriel is an American artist, writer, educator, humanitarian and entrepreneur living and loving Shanghai. Gabriel moved to Shanghai in 2012 without knowing much about China – she frequently jokes that she, “didn’t even read the Wikipedia page”. Due to the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (the policy that defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman) in the US, Gabby moved to China with her former fiancé while waiting for the policy to change. Although the love she initially moved here for didn’t last, Gabby fell in love with Shanghai, and started the photo series, Shanghai Love Notes, in 2014. Also in 2014, Gabby founded Shanghai’s leading queer community, LesQueers (LQ). LesQueers is committed to convening queer women (and gender queer people) in a vibrant and inclusive community.
